This article explains how to manage Saylor University web, email, and mobile notifications.
You might find that you receive more email notifications from Saylor University than you would like, especially if you participate in course discussion forums. Fortunately, you can easily manage notifications through your account, using the steps below.
Please note that certain account and transactional emails cannot be switched off. The settings on this page affect non-essential notifications only.
Do you have a question about a notification you have received from Saylor University? Please contact our student support team and describe the notification you received. If possible, include a screenshot so that our staff can better understand what you are seeing. You can also forward an email you have received from us to our support email address, contact@saylor.org.
Did you receive emails about "self-enrollment expiry"? See Manage self-enrollment expiry notifications in the help center.
Manage general notifications
Types of notifications
Through your Saylor University account, you can control non-essential notifications sent via Web, Email, and Mobile:
- Web notifications appear in the bell icon next to your account avatar. They are only visible when logged in to your account.
- Email notifications are sent to the email address associated with your account.
- Mobile notifications are "push" messages that appear on your mobile device. You will only receive these notifications if you have the Saylor University or Moodle Mobile app installed. Note that you can also manage mobile notifications on your device, as you would for any other app.
Adjusting notifications
Follow these steps to adjust your notifications preferences:
- Log in to your Saylor University account.
-
Click on your account avatar and select Preferences from the drop-down menu.
-
On your account preferences page, select Notification preferences.
-
Find the notification(s) you want to adjust. For each type of notification, you will see three toggle switches for Web, Email, and Mobile app notifications. Toggle the switches on or off, according to your preferences. Your changes are saved automatically.
Manage discussion forum notifications
Per-forum notifications
When viewing a discussion forum in a course, you will see a button to Subscribe to forum (or Unsubscribe from forum, if you were already subscribed).
- Subscribe to forum: you will receive notifications for new forum posts.
- Unsubscribe from forum: you will not receive notifications for new forum posts.
Forum notification preferences
Follow the "manage general notifications" steps above. At or near the top, you will see options to adjust web, email, and mobile notifications for:
- Subscribed forum posts
- Subscribed forum digests
In the screenshot below, you can see that the student receives discussion forums notifications on the web (i.e. through the bell icon next to their avatar), but not by email or mobile push notification.
Forum subscription preferences
- Log in to your Saylor University account.
- Click on your account avatar and select Preferences from the drop-down menu.
-
On your account preferences page, select Forum preferences.
-
On the forum preferences page, adjust the settings (see descriptions below) and select the Save changes button.
The first two forum preferences settings are the most important for adjusting the amount of notifications you receive.
- Email digest type: by default, you receive one email for each post to any of your subscribed forums. To reduce the number of emails you receive for subscribed forums, select Complete or Subjects to get a single daily digest email for each forum.
- Forum auto-subscribe: by default, you are not automatically subscribed to forums. This is the best option to receive fewer email notifications. You can choose instead to automatically subscribe to forums. In both cases, you can still subscribe or unsubscribe to individual forums (see the instructions for Per-forum notifications above).
