What ESL courses are available?
We offer five ESL courses:
- ESL001: Elementary English as a Second Language
- ESL002: Intermediate English as a Second Language
- ESL003: Upper-Intermediate English as a Second Language
- ESL004: Advanced English as a Second Language
- ESL005: Business-Proficient English as a Second Language

What levels do the ESL courses represent?
We use the Common European Framework of References for Languages (CEFR) to describe the levels of our ESL courses.
- ESL001 – CEFR Level A2
- ESL002 – CEFR Level B1
- ESL003 – CEFR Level B2
- ESL004 – CEFR Level C1
- ESL005 – CEFR Level C2
What will I learn in the the ESL courses?
Our ESL series of courses cover beginner (ESL001), intermediate (ESL002, ESL003), and advanced (ESL004) concepts, and culminate with a course on English proficiency for business (ESL005).

Build your English language skills to better convey your ideas. With our ESL courses, you will get better at communicating in casual and professional settings.
In our ESL courses, you will:

Which course(s) should I take?
That depends on your current skill in English and what you would like to learn. You can enroll in one or more courses, or all five.
Each ESL course begins with a short section titled How Good Is Your English? before the first unit. Completing that section will help you to know how comfortable you are with that course.
If you find that a course feels too difficult for you, you can always change to a different course.
How do I enroll?
- Log in to your Saylor Academy account (or create your account)
- From the course catalog, go to the course you would like to enroll in
- Near the top of the course page, click the button Enroll me in this course
- Repeat steps 2 and 3 for each course you would like to take
All of your enrolled courses will be found on your student dashboard, displayed to you each time you log in to our website.
When can I start my course?
Our courses are completely self-paced. You can begin learning whenever you are ready, and study on your own schedule.
Our courses do not have live instructors or scheduled lectures – everything you need to read, watch, or do can be found in the course itself.

How do I get my certificate?
Your certificate of completion will be awarded after you pass the Certificate Final Exam for your course. The final exam passing grade for ESL courses is 70% or higher.

Are these courses and certificates free?
Yes! Saylor Academy courses and certificates are free of cost. All of your study materials are provided to you in your course.
Can I use my certificate to prove English Language Proficiency for a university program?
We cannot say for certain that your university would accept our ESL courses as proof of English proficiency, but some students have shared their Saylor Academy ESL certificates with their universities.
University staff can verify your certificate, review our courses, and learn more about Saylor Academy.
