Where can I find information about the Saylor Direct Credit program?
These pages on our website are the best source of information on using the Saylor Direct Credit program and provide more detail for most of the questions below.
What is Saylor Direct Credit?
Saylor Direct Credit courses are recommended for college credit by the American Council on Education (ACE). You can use these courses to potentially transfer credit to your college or university.
What courses are available?
Only some of our course are recommended for credit. Our Saylor Direct Credit Courses page has the most up-to-date list of what is currently available.
What is the difference between the Certificate Final Exam and the Saylor Direct Credit Final Exam?
All Saylor Academy courses offer a Certificate Final Exam, which grants a free certificate upon completion. Courses in the Saylor Direct Credit program include a proctored credit final exam in addition to the normal certificate exam. The credit exam provides a recommendation for credit from ACE upon completion.
Passing the proctored credit exam is the ONLY way to earn the ACE recommendation for credit for your course. The unproctored certificate final exam does not offer any recommendation of credit.
Do I need to complete both the certificate and credit exams?
No, you need only complete the Saylor Direct Credit Final Exam for your course in order to earn your credit recommendation. You do not need to take the certificate exam at all, although we suggest that you use the certificate exam for study and practice.
What does it cost?
We do not charge tuition or transcript fees and using our course is free. The only financial cost is for using the required SmarterProctoring service. SmarterProctoring charges $5 USD for each exam proctoring session.
My course is expired. What does that mean?
Credit recommendations from ACE are issued for a period of several years. When that recommendation window ends without being renewed, students can no longer get a recommendation for college credit by completing the course.
In some cases, Saylor Academy has renewed the ACE recommendation for a course, but our updated course materials, including the new Saylor Direct Credit Final Exam for the course, are not yet available, so the course is listed on our credit courses page with an end date in the past. While these courses are currently unavailable, once we make the required updates, we will publish the new recommendation window end date and make the credit exam available to students.
Will these courses transfer to my school?
We have a number of college and university partners who will accept some, or all, of our credit courses. Many schools have transfer credit policies that include accepting ACE recommendations. Talk to your school advisor or an Admissions representative to find out what your school might accept.
When can I take my exam?
All exams are self-scheduled. You can take them anytime, but there is a required 14-day wait period between attempts and you have a maxmimum of three attempts.
Visit your course page and find the Saylor Direct Credit section near the end of the course for more details on the exam.
How do I use SmarterProctoring?
